AUSTIN DORR
Marlton, New Jersey - Chelsea, Massachusetts

Austin Dorr, originally from marlton, got involved with trapshooting by chance.  He drove by Pine Belt Sportsman Club one evening when he noticed the shooters under the lights and pulled in.  Having a semi-automatic shotgun and some shells in his trunk he stopped and signed up for a practice round.  He broke 24 out of 25 and walked off the line wondering how he missed that one target!

It certainly didn't take him long to figure it out.  During his first year of registered shooting he earned enough yardage to get punched back to the 26.5 yard line and finished with a 98.56 singls average on 4,725 targets.  Austin's explosive start came just at the rigth time.  The late Jimmy Robinson created the Sports Afield "Rookie of the Year" (1966) and Austin Dorr ws the first recipient of this award.

The following year he continued his winning ways by capturing the singles and the doubles titles in New Jersey at the Northern and Southern Zone shoots.  At the New Jersey State shoot he was runner-up in the Singles Championship after tying Rich Brzezicki with 198, and then won the doubles and HAA titles.

Austin was elected President of the NJSTA for a two year term starting in 1968, but it did not detract from his shooting ability.  That year in the Eastern 1000-bird marathon held at Pine Belt Sportsman Club he set the record with 995 out of the 1000 targets including a record run of 730 straight.  That same year he also held the high average for NJ shooters in singles and doubles.  In 1969 Austin would break another record by winning the NJ State doubles title with a 98.

Austin's winning ways were not confined to New Jersey alone.  He often traveled and would squad with Archie DiPaolo, Gerry Litteral, Gordon Gold and Rich Brzezicki.  He won the singles and HOA at the NYAC, the HOA at Pinehurst, NC and open trophies in Dlaware and Connecticut.  Along the way he also won the singles and HOA at the Westy Hogan, twice won the Jersey Cricket and as a member of the Cavaliers he took home the singles, doubls and HOA tropies.

Austin's last registered targets came in 1975 and his totals were 33,775 singles, 16,000 handicap and 10,300 doubles.

These days Austin resides in Chelsea, Massachusetts and keps active by snowmobiling and fishing from a 24' wooden boat which he built by himself at the age of 79.
